Arvin targets one of the most unexpressed emotions of war—fear.  Through his character “Heck”, a naïve 18-year-old farm boy, we get to see how choices that would be made under normal circumstances would be considered cowardice in war-time situations.  We feel all of Heck’s turmoil as he struggles to live up to the American ideal of a heroic soldier in war.
