Processes applications for civil commitments to psychiatric care facilities for Ocean County patients, maintains patient court records, verifies mental health history searches and establishes financial responsibility of patients or their legally responsible representative for cost of care reimbursement when applicable. Patients include residents of schools for the Developmentally Disabled and patients in psychiatric care facilities. The Superior Court files held by the Ocean County Adjuster are confidential yet the office is still the best local source for legally authorized persons to obtain information about patients admitted to psychiatric facilities. The primary role of the Ocean County Adjuster is the setting of amounts, collection and processing of payments toward patients cost of care to offset the expense to county and state taxpayers.

Services:
MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY: Coordinates and schedules court hearings, with New Jersey State Institutions and Agencies, for Ocean County residents. Seeks and sets contribution amounts through investigations and hearings. Financial hearings are held for persons legally responsible for the cost of care of committed patients.
PUBLIC SAFETY: Processes Mental Health Search requests to determine history of mental health for state and municipal police departments as part of the gun permit issuance process, etc.

Provides services to vulnerable adults, 18 years of age and older, who are victims of abuse, neglect and/or exploitation and are unable to protect themselves.
