RECYCLING
What
Must I Recycle?
Under
New Jersey law, Ocean County residents and businesses
are required to recycle certain items. The Ocean
County Department of Solid Waste Management maintains
lists
of these items. Your
municipality may require you to recycle other
items. Your
municipality will require you to follow the
municipality’s rules. Contact your Municipal
Recycling Coordinator for further information.

him or her first.
Ocean
County Department of Solid Waste Management
If
your
municipal recycling coordinator does not know
how to dispose of an item, he or she should refer
you here. Ocean County maintains recycling
centers at Lakewood and Manahawkin. “The
two facilities both have 24-hour Resident Recycling
Centers for aluminum and tin cans, glass containers,
plastic beverage containers, aerosol cans, newspapers,
mixed paper and residential cardboard. Recycling
is also available during regular hours of operation
at both Centers for household dry cell batteries
and auto batteries, motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze,
tires, empty steel paint cans, and boat shrink wrap.”

DONATIONS AND DISPOSAL
There
are other things you may not want to throw out,
or should not throw out. In general, contact any
organization before you arrive at their location
with a donation.
Automobiles/TRUCKS/BOATS
Some
charities will not accept a vehicle donation if
the vehicle is more than a certain number of years
old. They may also require that the vehicle be in
good condition. They may require you to deliver
the vehicle to their location, and may have other
requirements. Check with the particular charity
for details.
America's
Car Donation Charities Center
The
Center refers potential donors to a number of New
Jersey and national charities. They have an online donation form to donate your car, truck, boat, trailer or RV.
American
Lung Association
The
Association has an Vehicle
Donation Program.
American
Red Cross Vehicle Donation Center The Center has
an online
donation form to donate your vehicle.
Salvation
Army
The
Army has a Car Donation Program.
There
are other New Jersey charities which accept vehicle
donations. Some advertise in local newspapers, which
are available at your
local Ocean County Library branch.
Ocean
County Library
The
Library accepts donations of usable books in good
condition. We cannot accept school books, encyclopedias,
Readers Digest condensed books, or magazines. Contact
your
local Ocean County Library branch

Phone Recycling Program
Cell
phones are accepted in unlimited quantities for
recycling at the County’s Northern and Southern
Recycling Centers and The County Connection
at the Ocean County Mall. Residents and businesses
may drop off their outdated cell phones at these
locations during operating hours at no cost.
Salvation
Army
The
Army will pick up certain items, and maintains drop
off boxes for others. You may also bring donations
to their thrift
stores. Call 1-800-958-7825 for additional information.
Other
organizations maintain drop off boxes at various
locations in the county.

Ocean
County Department of Solid Waste Management
Computers
are accepted for recycling at the County’s Northern
and Southern Recycling Centers. This program is
for computers only, no televisions or VCR’S are
accepted. Residents may bring computers and computer
components Monday through Saturday at either Center
from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm at no cost.

County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program
During the spring and fall of each year the
Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the
Department of Solid Waste Management conduct a Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Program.
Your
municipality
may maintain a recycling center where you may bring
scrap metal. Contact your
municipal recycling coordinator for additional
information.
You
may also look in your local telephone directory
under the category “Scrap Metals” for local
junk yards.

ENERGY CONSERVATION
New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program from the N.J. Office of Clean Energy promotes energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable sources of energy including solar, wind, and geothermal. Save on energy costs with energy saving tips, rebates, and home energy programs.
State of New Jersey’s Energy Master Plan includes total energy used in the state by fuel source including petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power, coal, and hydroelectric power. The Greenhouse Gas Fact Sheet has greenhouse gas emission levels and effects on global warming in New Jersey.
New Jersey Natural Gas encourages wise energy use with its Conserve to Preserve Program.

LAND USE AND CONSERVATION
Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Programacquires environmentally sensitive lands in Ocean County for conservation and farmland preservation.
Garden State Preservation Trust Fund New Jersey’s Green Acres Program to preserve open space, farmlands, and the Pinelands.

WATER CONSERVATION
Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program is committed to action to restore, maintain, protect, and enhance the natural resources of the Barnegat Bay watershed.

A statewide listing of Farmers Markets by name and/or county.
Search for Farmers Markets in Ocean County where you can buy locally grown vegetables, fruits, and honey.
APPLE ORCHARDS IN NEW JERSEY
Search for apples by harvest date and where you can find them at roadside markets, farmers markets, and pick your own farms.
CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) FARMS
Many farms offer produce subscriptions, where buyers receive a weekly or monthly basket of produce, flowers, fruits, eggs, milk, meats, or any sort of different farm products. Search by state or local area to find a list of farms in your area.
