Volunteer-Based Library Delivery to Homes

Do you love to read but are unable to come into the physical library? We can come to you. A smiling volunteer will drop off and pick library materials, just for you! This is a free service to Ocean County *residents who are homebound due to illness or disability.

Volunteers are trained and undergo a background check. They are matched with customers who live in their community. Once assigned to you, your volunteer will arrange a mutually convenient time to visit. They can bring lists of books based on your author preferences or favorite topics. They will drop off and pick up library materials—usually every three weeks.

A list of materials already borrowed by the customer is kept in strictest confidence for the volunteer to reference when selecting new items for the Home Borrowers Service customer.

*A physician’s verification form is required. The Home Borrowers Service department will supply a copy once you apply.

Books by Mail Service

Ocean County Library provides a free mail service through the U.S. Post Office for any homebound individual over 18 who has, or is eligible for an Ocean County Library borrower’s card.  Items are delivered in a blue nylon bag to residents who cannot leave their homes due to illness or disability.

A form needs to be completed by the homebound customer and signed by a physician verifying that the customer is unable to come into the physical library.

Once registered with Books by Mail, customers may request materials in writing or over the phone, either 609-294-1197 or 732-286-0866.  Materials are returned to the Library in the same nylon bag.  Return postage and the Library’s address are on the reverse side of the card. Number of materials that can be mailed at one time may be limited as well as types of materials. Current items must be returned before new items can be shipped.

*A physician’s verification form is required. The Home Borrowers Service department will supply a copy once you apply.
