The Ocean County Library connects people, builds community and transforms lives every day through the power of information and stories. The Library is a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. Our programs, services, and collection aim to meet the needs of our diverse community throughout the year but special holidays and observances provide us an opportunity to focus our efforts on celebrating, uplifting, and honoring specific communities.

History

Each May Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated across the United States. This commemorative month began as a shorter celebratory period in 1977 until 1992 when Congress confirmed May as the designated commemorative month for these communities. May was chosen to honor the immigration of the first Japanese individuals in May of 1843 and to mark the completion of the transcontinental railroad in May of 1869 as most workers laying tracks were Chinese immigrants.
