Discover Andrew Carnegie’s Link to Libraries at the Ocean County Library Long Beach Island Branch

April 1, 2024

SURF CITY - Gilded Age industrial titan Andrew Carnegie dedicated much of his fortune to the cause of literacy. Historian Rick Feingold will present “Andrew Carnegie: From Steel to the Building of Libraries” at the Ocean County Library Long Beach Island Branch, 2 PM Tuesday, April 30.

Carnegie’s low-cost steel production method allowed railroads to flourish. Employees in Carnegie’s Homestead, PA factory endured primitive conditions. Rick’s program will detail the 1892 Homestead strike which pitted steelworkers against Pinkerton detectives and left 10 dead.

Carnegie eventually sold his steel interests to J. P. Morgan and invested significant sums into the building of more than 2,500 libraries, many of which still stand today.

Rick Feingold teaches American Business History at Bergen County College, Paramus. He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Penn State University and a Bachelor’s degree in History from Rutgers University.
