Examine Cranberries’ Chronology at the Ocean County Library Berkeley Branch

September 19, 2025

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP – The onset of autumn means another busy season of cranberry harvesting in South Jersey. Get a glimpse of local Pine Barrens harvesting history during “It’s Cranberry Time!” in the Ocean County Library Berkeley Branch, 1 p.m. Saturday, October 11.

Join us for a retrospective look at Double Trouble Village, the company town on the tip of the Pine Barrens in Bayville where this versatile, valuable fruit from surrounding bogs was processed before heading to markets and dinner tables. The village housed one of New Jersey’s largest cranberry operations for most of the 20th century.

Interpretive staffers from Double Trouble Village Historic Site will share dramatic images and rare videos of labor-intensive dry picking and modern water harvesting of cranberries still performed today.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Berkeley Library, volunteers who support the Library through programs, fundraising, and advocacy. New members are always welcome. Application forms are available at all Library branches and reading centers and on the OCL website.
