Get a Glimpse of Presidential Partying at the Ocean County Library Long Beach Island Branch

July 8, 2025

SURF CITY – Have you ever imagined attending a glamorous White House Presidential function or State Dinner? Here is a program you won’t want to miss. Alan DeValerio, former butler in the Presidential home, will take you inside “The History of White House Entertainment” at the Ocean County Library Long Beach Island Branch, 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 5.

Alan, who catered to heads of state during the Reagan, Carter and Bush eras, will divulge details of the preparations for entertaining at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and its evolution since Franklin D. Roosevelt was the nation’s Chief Executive. You will hear his own brushes with history and stories related by people who have taken care of our First Families ever since the FDR years.

Alan will display choice items from his collection of White House Christmas cards, programs, menus and other rare artifacts along with personal photos. He will also have copies of his book A History of Entertaining in the Modern White House available for purchase.

The Friends of the Island Library, volunteers who support the Library through programs, fundraising and advocacy, generously sponsor this program. New members are always welcome. Application forms are available at all Library branches and reading centers and the OCL website.
