See Community Crochet Tree at OCL Brick Branch and Meet Its Crafters in Decembe

November 27, 2024

BRICK TOWNSHIP -  The Ocean County Library, Brick Branch, is pleased to display a unique, handcrafted symbol of holiday spirit and togetherness. The eight-foot-tall, 500-square Community Crochet Tree will be on view throughout December. Meet the nimble crafters during their Artists’ Reception, 10:30 AM Saturday, December 7.

Senior Librarian Laura Meeker-Korch developed the idea. “I saw a crocheted Christmas tree at the Little Falls [New York] Public Library,” Laura said. “Two gentlemen, John Ossowski and Mike Beehm, made it to honor their mothers and the fiber industry in the area.”

Beginning in January 2024, Laura enlisted community members through the “Crochet Around the Corner” and “Crochet Palooza” programs. Beginning in January of this year, members led by Joyce Dombrowski, Linda Horm and Chrisine Wray crocheted squares for the project.

The volunteers more than met the challenge. “On average,15 to 20 squares were collected each month from the ‘Crochet Palooza’ program, some months over 30 squares,” Laura marveled. ’Crochet Around the Corner’ saw a core five to 12 participants each month.”

Enjoy light refreshments during the December 7 Artists’ Reception. Please be aware that the snacks might contain potential allergens.

The Community Crochet Tree display is free and open to the public during normal Branch hours. No registration is required. For more information, stop by the OCL Brick Branch, 301 Chambers Bridge Road, call (732) 477-4513 or visit the Library’s online Calendar of Events.
