Take a Trip to the Moon at the Ocean County Library Brick Branch
April 17, 2025BRICK TOWNSHIP – Climbing toward the stars, the first observational step for fledgling astronomers is the Moon. Join Jim Webster, President of the Astronomical Society of the Toms River Area (ASTRA) for “Beginner Astronomy - The Moon: Our Nearest Neighbor” in the Ocean County Library Brick Branch, 6:30 PM Thursday, May 15.
Jim will take you through the terrain of this barren satellite that is an indispensable component in the Earth’s delicate life-supporting balance. You will also have a chance to explore simple citizen science projects that you can undertake.
ASTRA, established in 1977, is open to everyone interested in astronomy and space science. Members are of all ages and observational experience levels.
In addition to his stewardship of ASTRA, Jim transformed his concerns about the impact of light pollution on astronomy and nature into action as a Dark Sky Advocate. Members of Dark Sky International use their skills and passions to advocate for night sky protection and light pollution limits in their communities and beyond.
His dark sky efforts led to Jim’s role as a SciStarter Ambassador, encouraging involvement in citizen science projects in communities. SciStarter digitally connects citizen science activities nationwide to record astronomy study patterns, encourage engagement and cultivate interest.
